Our artist chefs blend passion and taste preparing your fantasies of taste into reality to relish the unbeatable butter chicken and dal makhani since The Founder, Shri Kundan Lal Gujral, converted underground pits used by local villagers to bake breads to one of the most iconic cooking means of today. Tandoor was conceived by Moti Mahal and continues to swell today putting Tandoori Chicken andTandoori Cooking on world gourmet map.
When India partitioned in 1947, Gujral moved to Delhi and started Moti Mahal in his new home city, Darya Ganj. The place quickly proved popular and within a year, Kundan Lal Gujral turned his small road side eatery into a 400 seat restaurant. He deduced tomato gravy, lushed in butter and cream that softened his left over chickens. The combination proved to be a master stroke and thus, by accident or an act of genius, the Butter Chicken was born.
Dignitaries like former Indian Prime Ministers, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, former President Dr. Zakir Hussain and actors Raj Kapoor, Nargis and Soviet leader MikhailGobachev were among the famous patrons Former education minister M Maulana Azad once told the Shah of Iran that coming to Delhi without eating at Moti Mahal would be like visiting Agra without seeing TajMahal. Gujral served his iconic dishes, Butter Chicken, Dal Makhani, Chicken Pakora, Mutton Burrah here in Moti Mahal Daryaganj Delhi. Later in 1970's Kundan Lal's son, Nand Lal
Gujral expanded Moti Mahal in South Delhi to establish Moti Mahal Delux chain of restaurants.
